Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary

The National Chambal
Sanctuary, located in Etawah, near Agra is spread over an
area of 635 sq. kms. Established in 1979, the park has a
rare collection of exotic rarely found species. The
unusual gangetic dolphin is the main attraction. The
sanctuary is presently a part of a large area
co-administered by Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar
Pradesh.
The sanctuary houses many other inhabitants like mugger,
gharial, chinkara, samber, nilgai wolf and wild boar. One
can find the nearest airport, situated at Agra, which is
90 km away from the sanctuary and nearest railhead is also
at Agra.
Fauna:
Approximately 400 km of the Chambal river is within the
reserve, forming the core area. Apart from the Ganges
River Dolphin (Platanista gangetica), the other
inhabitants of the sanctuary include magar (crocodile) and
gharial (Gavialis gangeticus). Stretch of crystal clear
water also supports Marsh Crocodile, Smooth-coated Otters
(Lutrogale perspicillata), 6 species of Terrapins/Turtles
plus 250 species of birds. Migratory birds from Siberia
forms its rich avian fauna. Black-bellied Terns,
Red-crested Pochard and Ferruginous Pochard, Bar-headed
Goose, Sarus Crane, Great Thick-knee, Indian Courser,
Pallas's Fish Eagle, Pallid Harrier, Greater Flamingos and
Lesser Flamingos, Darters, and Brown Hawk Owl and many
other birds are part of the sanctuary's rich fauna.
It is one of the best places to see in the Indian Skimmer.
Only the entry point in UP is viable and recommended for
facilities and sightings.
Best time to visit:
November to February. Open year around.
