Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park - a
world heritage site is famous for the Great Indian one
horned rhinoceros. It was declared as National Park in
1974.
The Park lies partly in Golaghat District and partly in
Nagaon District of Assam. It is the oldest park in Assam
and covers an area of 430 Sq kms along the river
Brahmaputra on the North and the Karbi Anglong hills on
the South. The landscape of Kaziranga is of sheer forest,
tall elephant grass, rugged reeds, marshes & shallow
pools.
The National Highway 37 passes through the park area and
tea estates, hemmed by table-top tea bushes. One can even
see the rhinos and wild elephants straying near the
highway
The park is one of the last areas in eastern India
undisturbed by a human presence. It is inhabited by the
world's largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses, as
well as many mammals, including tigers, elephants,
panthers and bears, and thousands of birds.
Location
Latitude:- 26°30 N to 26°45 N; Longitude:- 93°08 E to
93°36 E
Climate:- Sub-Tropical Monsoon with average rainfall of
1320 mm and temperature ranging from 8° C in Winter to 38°
C in Summer
Fauna:
Beside of course the great one horned Indian Rhino, the
other major wild attractions include a large population of
Indian Elephants, Indian Bison, Swamp Deer or Barasingha,
Hog Deer, Sloth Bears, Tigers, Leopard Cats, Jungle Cats,
Otters, Hog Badgers, Capped Langurs, Hoolock Gibbons, Wild
Boar, Jackal, Wild Buffalo, Pythons, Monitor Lizards, etc.
The Park is a birding paradise (over 450 species) as well;
the grasslands are a raptor country that can be seen on
safari makes a remarkable experience. These include the
Oriental Honey Buzzard, Black-Shouldered Kite, Black Kite,
Brahminy Kite, Pallas's Fishing Eagle, White Tailed Eagle,
Grey-Headed Fishing Eagle, Himalayan Griffon, etc. Huge
numbers of migratory birds descend on the parks lakes and
marshy areas during winters, including Greylag Geese,
Bar-Headed Geese, Ruddy Shelduck, Gadwall, Falcated Duck,
Red-Crested Pochard and Northern Shoveller.
One can also see monitor lizards and snakes.
Best time to visit:
Best time is from mid-November to early April. Best
sighting is though from end of Mar to early Apr. During
the monsoons, the Brahmaputra River bursts its banks,
flooding the low-lying grasslands and causing animals to
migrate from one area to another within the Park.
Safari timings:
Jeep safaris: 0730 to 0930 hrs. Later 1400 to 1530 hrs.
Elephant safaris: 0500 to 0600 hrs. Later, anytime between
1700 to 1900 hrs.
Go there for:
Rhinos, elephants and hoolock gibbons.
How to reach:
Kaziranga in central Assam stretches east to west along
the south bank of the Brahmputra. It spreads across two
districts, Nagaon and Golaghat.
The park is well connected by buses and taxis from both
Guwahati and Jorhat. Both these cities are the closest
airports as well.
by road:
National Highway 37 (well maintained) from Guwahati passes
through the park via Dispur, Nagaon, Jakhalabandha and
Hatihkuli (250 kms).
Jorhat is 90 kms to the East.
by air:
Jorhat (97kms/2hrs) is the nearest airport.
Guwahati is fairly well connected by air services from
Delhi and Calcutta.
by rail
Guwahati (250 kms), Jorhat (90 kms) and Furketing (75 kms)
are the nearest railheads. Taxis easily available from the
stations.
