Why you should choose Banjara

In 1993, Capt. Ajay Sud and his friend Rajesh Ojha found their way to the stunning Lahaul-Spiti area and started a love affair, which still continues. The immense, pristine natural beauty of the valleys, the awe-inspiring towering mountain peaks that stood guard over them and the gushing crystal clear rivers that ran through this spectacular terrain made them long to share this paradise with other like-minded travellers.

This entire region had been closed off after the Indo-China war because of its proximity to the border. Only Indians with Inner Line permits were allowed in. When the government began to permit access to the area the idea of making hitherto unexplored high mountain areas accessible to those willing to travel harder and farther was born. And so was the story of Banjara Camps & Retreats.

The initial offering was luxury tents with all the comforts of home set down in the most beautiful valley that could be found. The camp at Sangla was the first venture and its success took us into the high altitude cold desert of Spiti. And the rest as they say is history. Since then we have grown into a bigger operation with bricks and mortar retreats but our mission remains the same – Soft adventure with impeccable service and arrangements for the whole family, in locales as beautiful as they are remote.

Today, we have an extensive infrastructure based in Kinnaur, Spiti and Kulu valleys, as well as in the North-East and Ladakh. And besides the luxury camps and retreats, we also organize customized and fixed departure trips and treks for clients and are now well networked with other like-minded service providers in the mountains.

In 2007, Banjara Camps & Retreats was the proud recipient of the prestigious "Adventure friendly - Camp" award, from the Adventure Tour Operators Association Of India.

We have travelled extensively in the Himalayas with the idea of promoting responsible tourism in areas not easily found, and today we can proudly claim that we offer an experience rather than just a regular sightseeing vacation.
